There is a possibility that your battery has a bad cell and/or is discharged such that the amps available are not sufficient to run the starter motor. The battery should be load tested (free at most battery stores or a mobile YourMechanic can test on site). If the battery tests "Good", try a spare (different) key that you know "works". Your vehicle has a chip key as part of the security system so you want to make sure that the issue is not a failed transponder key. If the battery is good and a different key doesn’t work, what you are experiencing is a failure of the starter to engage and run. The starting system and "circuit" must be diagnosed to find the fault. YourMechanic can easily perform all of these services, as well as the comprehensive diagnostic of the starting system, during a mobile visit to your location.

FAQs

Why is my Volkswagen clicking and not starting? ›

It might be a battery or alternator problem.

Perhaps your battery's dead, or your alternator, which charges the battery, isn't working correctly. If the source of the clicking is electrical, the starter (a small motor energized by the battery that gets the engine running) doesn't have enough juice to stay powered.

Why is my car not starting and making a beeping noise? ›

Battery Issues

Any fault in the battery can jeopardize your car's operation, so inspect it for issues like loose battery terminals and connections. If the beeping sound persists alongside an activated battery indicator on the dash, you might have to replace your battery.

Why does my car start beeping for no reason? ›

The beeping of your car does not necessarily mean there is a problem. More often than not, it is triggered by issues that require simple actions to fix. These include when a door is not well closed, not fastening your seat belt, and activating the parking brake when driving.

Does a bad alternator make a clicking noise? ›

Faulty Battery or Alternator

If you are hearing a clicking sound, it's possible there is an issue with the starter system. There can be a faulty battery or alternator, so jump-start the battery with help from a friend or neighbor. If your battery dies shortly after, then you might have a problem with your alternator.

Why does my car have power and click but wont start? ›

Do you hear a clicking noise when you turn the key in your car's ignition? If so, it could be an indication of a more serious problem. This clicking noise is usually caused by one of five things: a dead battery, loose wiring, faulty starter motor, faulty ignition switch or corroded battery terminals.

Why is my car beeping in the middle of the night? ›

You have a wiring problem or, more likely, your alarm system is malfunctioning. Take it to a mechanic or alarm company and have them fix the problem.

What does it mean when a car chirps? ›

If your car is making a chirping noise, you might be dealing with a worn serpentine belt, a failed belt tensioner, or a bad wheel bearing. Feathered or worn tires, a failed u-joint, and a bad throw out bearing can also cause your car to make chirping noises.

Why won't my car suddenly not start? ›

Check the battery if there is a slow crank and a clicking sound, and the car engine won't start. However, if the check engine light illuminates, the issue could be the engine or fuel pump. If your vehicle doesn't start, call AAA, roadside service, or another towing company to take your car to get it repaired.

Why is my car not opening or starting? ›

A flat battery is the most common reason your car won't start and can be caused by a number of things, such as lights being left on, something in the electrical system causing a battery drain, or even a faulty battery that won't hold its charge.

How do I know if the starter motor has gone? ›

The most common signal that your starter has a problem is if nothing happens when you turn the key or push to start. Unusual noises, such as clinking, grinding and whirring. If you ignore these sounds, it can eventually lead to damage to the engine flywheel. Intermittent problems starting the car.

Why is my car not starting but the battery isn't dead? ›

When you have a brand-new battery but still can't start the car, the alternator might be the issue. Cold and damp climates may increase wear on an alternator, causing it to fail. Flickering gauges and a burning rubber smell could indicate that the alternator overheated and requires replacement.

Can you jump a car with a bad starter? ›

You can try to jump-start your car while it has a bad starter, but there's no guarantee that it will work if the starter has failed completely or has a mechanical issue. A quick fix to get your starter going is to gently tap it with a hammer.
