To authentic a Chanel bag, we usually check the serial number with its card and hologram sticker inside the bag. The serial number of a Chanel bag is its identity, and each bag has its own unique serial number. Reading the serial number, we can know when the Chanel bag is produced or launched. Although Chanel is founded in 1910, the serial number system was introduced in 1986. The first group of serial number started with 0 and in 7 digits, while nowadays the serial numbers are in 8 digits.

For 2021, Chanel launched new authenticator -Metal Tag to replace the iconic hologram sticker and card. The serial number is no longer in order like the above.The new code is a mix of numbers and letters on the metal tag, which does not reveal the production year anymore. The metal tag is usually visible in the interior of the bag. Or for WOC (wallet on chain), the metal tag would be found inside the zip pocket.

Although it might be less convenient to check the year, it hopefully can avoid counterfeit issue (or at least reduce the number of counterfeit and scams).

LV also announced launching microchip for their bags in 2021.You will not find any datecode in all newlymanufacturedLV bags and small leather goods in 2021. They are all replaced into microchip which areputting in the bag that cannot be seen. They must be scanned LV in-store with their authenticator. They also changed this authenticity way to block the replica market and fight counterfeit issue.
