The O.C. Swap Meet — a twice-monthly event held at the Orange County fairgrounds in Costa Mesa — has been canceled this Saturday as a precautionary measure during the current coronavirus surge, after its owner was reportedly exposed to the virus.
David “DL” Sesena, who reprised the beloved bazaar last May after more than a yearlong closure, confirmed Tuesday he’d been exposed to an infected individual and made the difficult decision to suspend operations for one day only.
“I felt it was better to reschedule this Saturday’s event in accordance with close exposure recommendations,” he said by email Tuesday. “I [felt] was in the best interest of our vendors, staff and community.”
He said he hoped the canceled Jan. 8 swap meet would be moved to a future date. The next regularly scheduled event on Jan. 22 has not been canceled, Sesena clarified. The market usually takes place on the second and fourth Saturdays of each month.
News of the closure comes as the Orange County Health Care Agency on Wednesday reported 4,646 new daily infections and four more deaths. About 673 individuals were being hospitalized with COVID-19, representing a 25.8% increase in the county’s three-day average.
A longtime employee at the Orange County Market Place is bringing a swap meet back to the OC Fair & Event Center on Saturday, May 29. The Market Place has been closed for more than a year, first due to the pandemic and then a contract dispute between the operator and fairgrounds officials.
Vendors can sell two times in a calendar year without a sales permit. After two sales dates a sales permit showing OCC Swap Meet's address is required. Sales Permits can be obtained from any Board of Equalization office. Sub-leasing is strictly prohibited.
Outside food and beverages are permitted if stored in factory-sealed receptacles. (No cans, glass, outside alcohol or hard-sided coolers.) Water bottles are permitted if factory-sealed or empty upon entry.
Simply put, if you own more than three (3) dogs or three (3) cats over the age of four (4) months, you must apply for an animal permit from OC Animal Care. See Animal Permits for more information on obtaining an animal permit and whether permit are allowed in your city.
Just be wary of any cute animals for sale. Cruel breeders count on potential customers to fall in love with their irresistible puppies after seeing, holding and playing with them at swap meets. But we urge you to please make adoption your first option when bringing home a new pet.
Pets are allowed in the Swap Meet. Owner is responsible for animal. Pet must be leashed at all times and must be under the control of the owner at all times.
Orange County Great Park welcomes your pooch with open paws/arms. This unusual park allows you to enjoy a balloon ride 400 feet in the air while being safely tethered.
