The Early Learning Coalition of Hillsborough County is a nonprofit that works to ensure all our community's youngest children grow up to achieve anything they can imagine by providing the best possible early learning experiences and supporting the families and teachers who care for them. Working together with families, educators and community partners to prepare every child for kindergarten, we are creating a brighter future for Hillsborough County and all who live and work here.

The Early Learning Coalition of Hillsborough County provides subsidized child care for working-poor families. School Readiness programs provide children access to safe, early learning environments and parents the ease of mind while they work to become financially self-sufficient. Early learning programs provide the foundation children need to be successful, life-long learners.Voluntary Prekindergarten is free for all 4-year-olds (and some 5-year-olds) that reside in Florida. VPK provides the self-management and emergent literacy skills that are critical for a child’s academic success. VPK provides a quality early learning experience at participating private and faith-based child care centers, many public schools, Head Start sites, as well as licensed family child care homes. Children are taught emergent literacy skills, such as letter and sound recognition, which are critical for academic success. Each child has access to qualified instructors and age-appropriate curricula.

Voluntary Prekindergarten

The Voluntary PreKindergarten (VPK) program prepares 4-year-olds for kindergarten. VPK provides the self-management and emergent literacy skills that are critical for a child’s academic success. VPK provides a quality early learning experience at participating private and faith-based child care centers, many public schools and Head Start sites, as well as licensed family child care homes. The program is free to all Florida residents regardless of income. Parents have the option of selecting from either a school year program with 540 instructional hours or a summer program that includes 300 instructional hours.

Children are taught emergent literacy skills, such as letter and sound recognition, which are critical for academic success. Each child has access to qualified instructors and age-appropriate curricula.

VPK is FREE for all 4-year-olds who reside in Florida. VPK programs feature:

Age-appropriate curricula and a strong emphasis on early literacy skills
Manageable class sizes

School Readiness program (Subsidized Child Care Services)

The School Readiness program provides financial assistance for child care services to qualified Hillsborough County families. The program provides parents access to high-quality early care and education while they are working to become financially self-sufficient. Parents are provided with information on child development, as well as parent engagement opportunities that reinforce the belief that parents are their child’s first teacher.

Child care services are based on individual need and can include extended day, extended year, and, in some cases, school-age care to support parents becoming financially self-sufficient.
