CAT manufactured commercial truck diesel engines for many years but exited the business back in 2010. Their manufacturing still exists today, except they are done for various off-highway equipment and machines.

When you make a reliable engine such as the Cat 15, word travels fast. Design-wise not much had changed. It was largely based on the 3406E, but with several improvements aimed to make a more reliable overall engine.

The current Duramax engine, the Duramax 6.6L L5P, produced the most at 445 horsepower. In comparison, the most recent Cummins engine, 6.7L 24V Ram Cummins, produces 400 horsepower. Duramax diesel engines have a reputation for offering slightly more horsepower than Cummins engines.

General Specs of the 3406B CAT Engine

The physical dimensions of the engine are 117.28 inches long by 39.22 inches wide, with a height of 58.04 inches. The 3406B typically reaches around 350 horsepower at 1,800 revolutions per minute.

The complete system includes two turbos, multiple bellows, and a pre-cooler system (a small air to water intercooler system) - separate from the trucks on board CAC system.

During the compression stroke, the piston compresses the air and raises its temperature and pressure. During the power stroke, fuel is injected into the cylinder and ignites, creating a high-pressure gas that pushes the piston down and turns the crankshaft.
